Krokodil is the newest and deadliest designer drug in Russia. A cocktail of codeine, gasoline, paint thinner, hydrochloric acid and iodine, the drug gets it's name from the scaly rot that develops at the user's injection site. The drug produces the same effects as heroin at a much cheaper cost and is mainly found in the poorest and most remote parts of the country.
Irina Pavlova came to the Chichevo Rehab center after using the drug for over six years. Located 2 hours outside of Moscow, Chichevo is one of 500 centers run by Russian Pentecostals without assistance from the state. Life at Chichevo consists of a strict regime of bible study, carpentry, hauling water from the village well and relaxing in the Banya--Russian baths.
